Polymeric sand is one of the most important yet least understood components of a paver installation. This specialized sand plays a crucial role in the longevity and appearance of your paver patio, driveway, or walkway.
What is Polymeric Sand? Polymeric sand is a blend of fine sand and polymer additives that, when activated with water, hardens to form a flexible yet firm joint between pavers. Unlike regular sand, polymeric sand resists erosion from rain and wind, inhibits weed growth, and deters insects from nesting between pavers.
How Does it Work? After being swept into the joints between pavers, polymeric sand is activated by misting it with water. The polymers bind the sand particles together, creating a solid but slightly flexible joint that moves with the pavers through temperature changes and ground movement without cracking.
When to Replace Polymeric Sand: Over time, polymeric sand can deteriorate from weather exposure, foot traffic, and cleaning. Signs that your polymeric sand needs replacement include visible sand loss in joints, increased weed growth, ant hills appearing between pavers, and pavers that feel loose or unstable.
Application Tips: Proper application is essential for polymeric sand to perform correctly. The pavers must be completely dry before application. Sand should be swept into all joints until they are filled to within 3mm of the paver surface. Excess sand must be thoroughly removed from paver surfaces before activation, as leftover sand will create a hazy film.
Common Mistakes: The most common mistake is applying polymeric sand to wet pavers, which causes premature activation and can result in a hazy residue on the surface. Another frequent error is not sweeping away all excess sand before activation. Both issues are difficult to correct after the fact.
Professional vs. DIY: While polymeric sand is available at home improvement stores, professional application ensures proper results. Our team has the experience and equipment to prepare the surface correctly, apply the sand to the right depth, and activate it properly for maximum performance and longevity.
